Significance of a Country's Independence...

Anyone capable of understanding the word "Independence" will know how much it means to the soul...well, Independence is that word which comes into context every time humans think they are threatened in some way or the other...
They say India struggled a lot to request the British to grant them the Independence...and this was possible through non-violence...what an awesome word! Hardly makes sense to a lot of humans in the current society who think otherwise...
After so many years of the Indian Independence and telling people all around the world the story of how we got that, etc etc....
India = Bollywood for a lot of Indians and friends here in the U.S...I find it so hard to even explain to people that there is more to India than bollywood...
and this comes up...Some bollywood actress is going to lead the Independence day March in NYC...and some other actress had done that last year...
A million questions rise in my mind...
Why an actress?
Has she done anything socially significant for the people of India?
Aren't there a lot of socially committed people who could lead the march?
Why do Indians in U.S. welcome such ideas?
Does no one have anything to say or protest?
and...and...??????????
So, people please....India is much more than bollywood!!

Nothing against that actress, but really what did she do. She can be a good entertainer to the Indians (again not even to the entire Indian population). I was under the impression that The Independence day is celebrated every year to make everyone especially the young generation to understand how much of a struggle it was to obtain Independence and how much we should preserve it.

Celebrating the Independence day is not just about bringing in the crowd, entertaining them, drinking and dancing. It is more than that.

People who organize this should do this out of social responsibility and not see it like a commercial event.

If they ran out of ideas, here are the few things what they can do.
1. Invite a Veteran who lived during the time of Independence and hear stories from him about how hard our elders fought for our freedom and how non-violence made a difference.
2. Motivate school kids to write an essay on "India's Independence"
3. Or at the least play some Freedom Struggle movies or make some inspirational movies stating the significance of Independence and Rights for everyone on this earth to be free or showing how Non-Violence can be a solution to today's problem.
